The Art Academy of Latvia (hereinafter – AAL) was founded in 1919, at the same time when the Republic of Latvia was formed, and has been the leading art university in Latvia for more than 100 years. Embodying the spirit of creativity and freedom, AAL has been able to stand for its independence and purposefully develop - it has become an important art institution on a regional and European scale, with the aim to provide high-quality competitive higher education and comprehensively develop art, design, and science, thus ensuring unity of creative and scientific research as well as the continuity of studies.

The Ceramics Department has existed since 1924 and is one of the oldest departments of our Art Academy.  Historically, ceramics has particularly deep and significant roots in the culture of the entire Baltic region.

Our experience so far shows that summer schools, art symposia and master classes attract a lot of attention. The combined, complex approach to this process, mixing theoretical lessons with practice, usually renders excellent results. This process of the creation of a work of art and the sensitive contact with art on a non-verbal level gives added value to the cognitive process.  Our Ceramics Department of AAL has been organizing various events for students, teachers and professional artists every year since 2001. The geography of participants is constantly expanding (in total, participants have come from 26 different countries), which indicates an increased interest.
